Key Statistics
The following statistics have been documented from 41 different clinical studies over the course of 7 years evaluating the effect of drug therapy non-compliance:
Over 300,000 people yearly are hospitalized for drug related non-compliance, and 25 percent of these result in death.
The cost associated with non-compliance in drug therapy has topped 130 billion of which a large percentage of the costs may be due by the patient in the form of co-pays and co-insurance.
Currently 52% of patients are found to be non-compliant with their drug therapy, studies cite the following reasons: taking multiple medications, lack of organization, forgetfulness, age, lack of disease state education, and lack of communication between doctors and pharmacies.
Studies also have found a direct correlation between people taking more than 4 medications and increased non-compliance that result in increased morbidity and mortality.
The results of non-compliance tend to cause changes in baseline measurements i.e. blood pressure, sugar and other diseases that require strict adherence to drug regimens and can lead to suboptimal therapeutic drug levels thus requiring more medications.
The sum of all studies result in the following conclusions: The more medications a person uses in over half of all cases can lead to non-compliance due to several factors, which often leads to further disease, hospitalization, or death and increased out of pocket expense.
Scriptaware software will be able to help organize and streamline your drug therapy regimens to ensure optimal compliance and reduced breaks in drug therapy. The overall result will be improved outcomes and lower out of pocket costs due to non-compliance and time spent at doctors and pharmacies.
